General Submissions:

Midway Journal accepts submissions of aesthetically ambitious work that invokes the colliding and converging energies of the fairgrounds. Midway Journal seeks to publish a variety of styles and diverse voices. We especially welcome marginalized voices and authors from underrepresented communities to submit. We strongly encourage writers to read a few issues of the journal before submitting.

General submissions are accepted between January 1 and May 31–we accept free submission between January 1 and May 31; we accept Tip Jar submissions for fiction, nonfiction, and art/ephemera year round.

Tip Jar/Expedited reading service to our contributors: For a nominal fee ($2.50), we will guarantee a careful, expedited reading of your work. We still offer a free submissions option, of course, as we understand not everyone can afford to pay every time they submit (nor should they have to), but the works of authors who opt to use the expedited submissions link will be attended to first. All funds from submissions will go toward meeting the rising costs of operating and maintaining the journal.

We accept all submissions through our online submission manager: http://midwayjournal.submittable.com/submit.

Writers are welcome to submit ONCE during each reading period. Please allow a 3-6 month response time before inquiring about work.

There are no page limits or word counts set for individual submissions. Simultaneous submissions accepted. Previously published work is not accepted.

Poetry:
Please send 3-5 poems in a single document with each poem beginning on a new page (see what we like in Midway Poetry). Poetry manuscripts should be single-spaced.

Prose:
Please send 1 piece of fiction (see Midway Fiction), or 2 pieces of flash, or sudden, fiction, or 1 piece of creative nonfiction (see Midway Nonfiction). Prose manuscripts should be double-spaced.

Art/Ephemera/Mixed-Genre
Please send 3-6 works of art/ephemera (see Midway Art) and 1-4 pieces of mixed genre (see Midway Mixed Genre).

Editing Services:

Midway offers a variety of editing services on works not submitted for publication consideration via Submittable. Editing service inquiries can be sent to editors@midwayjournal.com, subject line Editing Services Inquiry. Editing will be performed by Midway genre editors.

We will edit the poems/prose electronically using track changes. We will return the work to you via Submittable. Please allow up to two weeks turnaround time before making any inquiries on the status of your submission.

For poetry, we will consider everything from word and line edits, to theme, form, and style development. For prose, we will consider everything from word choice and sentence structure to character and conflict development to overall narrative structure and form. If the work submitted is linked in a particular way (e.g. a sonnet cycle), please let us know, and we will regard the submission with this formal consideration in mind.

All fees include a one-on-one consultation regarding your work.

Fiction/Nonfiction or Poetry Editing Service Options

Option 1:

Fiction/Nonfiction: $40 for 2 works of flash fiction/nonfiction or 1 story/essay up to 8 double-spaced pages/2,000 words.

Poetry: $40 for up to 6 pages of poetry, one poem per page.

Option 2:

Fiction/Nonfiction: $60 for up to 4 works of flash fiction/nonfiction or 1-2 longer stories/essays, totaling up to 16 double-spaced pages/4,000 words.

Poetry: $60 for up to 12 pages of poetry, one poem per page.

Option 3:

Fiction/Nonfiction: $80 for up to 6 works of flash fiction/nonfiction or 1-3 longer stories/essays, totaling up to 24 double-spaced pages/6,000 words.

Poetry: $80 for up to 18 pages of poetry, one poem per page.
